Ductwork Replacement in South Florida
Duct replacement built to SMACNA fabrication standards, Florida Energy Code insulation values and Miami-Dade moisture requirements — then leakage tested.
When Ductwork Needs Replacing, Not Patching
Sealing and repair go a long way. But past a certain point — insulation that has broken down along the run, a vapour barrier torn in too many places, duct sized or routed wrong from the start — you are maintaining a system that was never going to work properly. Replacement is the point where the ductwork stops being the limiting factor on your comfort. Talk to us about your duct system. Why South Florida Is Harder on Ductwork
Extreme heat loads and relentless humidity are a combination most duct installations aren't built for. A standard install that would be fine in a dry climate has a much smaller margin here, because every weakness in insulation or sealing meets attic air carrying a great deal of moisture. So we treat the house as one system. The building envelope, the ductwork and the equipment all work against the same external load, and a duct replacement that ignores any of the three tends to disappoint.Three Standards We Build To
Structural: SMACNA
Fabrication is what determines whether ductwork holds its shape and moves air the way it was designed to. Hangers and supports are spaced to prevent sagging, and dampers and accessories are reinforced so the duct keeps its integrity over time. Sag isn't cosmetic — it restricts airflow.Thermal: Florida Energy Conservation Code
Insulation is specified to the climate-zone requirements in the code — R-6 to R-8 across the run, per FBC-Energy Conservation Section R403.3.3. Where it's possible to route ducts inside the building's thermal envelope rather than through a hot attic, that's the better answer, because it reduces the load before insulation has to deal with it.Moisture: Miami-Dade Code
The outer jacket has to work as one continuous vapour barrier, which means every seam is both an air seal and a vapour seal. This matters more here than almost anywhere: a small break in the vapour barrier is where a sweating line starts. Return ducts get particular attention, since a leak there draws humid attic air straight into the system.Fabrication and Sealing Detail
Turning vanes go into 90-degree elbows at close intervals to guide air through the turn instead of letting it tumble, which is where noise and resistance come from. Damper moving parts are shielded with galvanised metal against abrasion. For sealing we dry-fit and square the connection before anything is sealed — getting alignment right first is what avoids gaps rather than bridging them afterward. Closure is done with UL 181A listed pressure-sensitive tapes and mastics.Flex Duct Done Properly
Flexible duct is where a lot of otherwise decent installs lose their performance. Left sagging and compressed between joists, its internal corrugation and constriction add real resistance to airflow. Ours is pulled taut to minimise internal corrugation, strapped at regular intervals with sag held to about half an inch, and routed to keep total effective length down. The insulation blanket is not compressed, because compressed insulation is thinner insulation.Condensate and Static Pressure
Managing water is as much a part of the job as moving air. Drain lines are pitched correctly to prevent overflow, and condensate handling follows Miami-Dade Ordinance 8-CC. We also measure Total External Static Pressure rather than estimating it. Pressure that's too high shortens motor life; too low and the system stops dehumidifying properly. Duct design that keeps pressure in the right band is what lets the equipment do what it was rated to do.Verified Before We Leave
Installation is the first step, not the last. We work through the NAIMA fibrous glass duct construction checklist to confirm no loose material has been left inside the ducts, and we leakage test to verify the air barrier actually holds.Where Replacement Fits
Not every duct problem needs new ductwork. If the issue is leakage at joints, duct sealing may be all that's called for. If it's accumulated debris, that's air duct cleaning. And if you're seeing condensation on the ducts themselves, that's a diagnosis before it's a replacement — we'd evaluate the insulation, vapour barrier and airflow together first.Get Your Duct System Assessed
